This was an individual project that spanned 4 weeks.
The Department of Labors government website and mobile app was out of date, had too much visual clutter, and too much information crammed into a small space. The solution was to redesign the website and mobile app to be responsive and update both of the navigations to be easier to read.
A heuristic evaluation was conducted first to determine the original usability of the Department of Labors desktop website, along with their mobile app. It was noted that the online website did not look or feel anything like the mobile app, and it was confusing as to who their target audience was.
From there a proto-persona was created to resemble who the main user was and how they
Behaved. By the overall look of the website, I came to the conclusion that the general user would be someone in HR needing forms for workplace compliance.
After, the first round of interviews were conducted. Five user tests by guerilla moderated user testing to determine the main pain points that presented themselves. Most of the complaints came from the amount of data that was in the navigation itself, and that it was very dizzying to look at. There were also complaints of how much body copy there was in the main homepage area. The forms section was another issue that arose. Users found that the lack of ability to search for forms was very frustrating.
Following research, the typical user path needed to be defined along with annotating the main homepage and navigation in order to redesign the new hierarchy. Card sorting was also done to visualize everything that was currently in the navigation and to determine if there was any duplicate information that needed to be sifted through.
After completing the information architecture, I was able to work on wireframing the the homepage and new navigation for both the website and the mobile app.
